Guna People

The Guna people live between Panama and Colombia, in three indigenous regions: Guna, Yala and Madugandi. The pieces belonging to the MAPA’s collection, including bracelets and anklets made by Teselia Arias in Ustupu island in 2013, come from the first region mentioned above. It is located in the Atlantic slope of Panama, comprising a continental strip and about fifty islands. It has a political-administrative organization independent of those of the Panamanian citizens. Regarding the production of handicrafts and folk art, these objects are intended for personal and commercial use, specially textiles, baskestry, pottery and wood carving. The molas, colorful fabrics with embroidery techniques used in the manufacture of women’s clothes, are widely recognized for their complexity and beauty. Currently the inhabitants of the islands have seen their traditional living conditions threatened by rising sea levels.
